Bonaire is part of the Netherland Antilles in the south Caribbean just 
north of Venezuela.  Part of the "ABC" islands including Aruba, 
Bonaire and Curacao.  Bonaires claim to fame is its beautiful water and 
excellent scuba diving.  Divers know this sleepy island as the perfect 
shore dive island.  Bonaire is surrounded by a coral reef system that can 
drop down to 100 feet just a few yards off shore.  There are over 80 dive 
sites around the island and around its co-island Klein.  Klein is a small 
uninhabited island to the west of Bonaire.  It is easily seen from the 
shores of Bonaire and is where most boat dives go.  The currents around 
Klein can get strong, but typically are not a problem.  Shore dives in 
Bonaire are incredible and easy to plan.  This island is the quintessential 
diving island.  All hotels have some kind of diving packages.  We found 
this island to easily be the best dive for your buck in the world.  Simply 
rent a car, pick up your tanks for the day, and drive to your site.  The 
easiest and most popular sites are about half a mile south of the airport.  
It's like a long straight street of model homes.  You drive down it and 
stop at the model home (dive site) you want to look at.  All the dive sites 
are clearly marked on yellow painted rocks.  Our favorites were Pink 
Sand Beach and Invisibles.  We averaged $8 per dive including rental 
car costs.  The reef system is excellent and is comparable to Cayman.  
The roads are in good condition and are very very easy to navigate and 
they drive on the right side.  Like most Caribbean Islands, Bonaires 
capital is where all the shopping is and boasts a disco that is a favorite 
of islanders.  The island is populated by only 14,000 people, it is very 
quiet and slow paced.  Property values in Bonaire are very high and 
development on the island by the wealthy is evident.  This is a sleepy 
island by choice not because it lacks big money.  The island is also 
known for its huge salt mines owned by Cargil.  These salt fields look 
like rice patty fields as far as the eye can see except the fields are full of 
diamond looking salt pellets.  Some are completely pink.  Bonaire is 
also known for its bird watching, including numerous pink flamingos in 
Washington Slagbaai National Park.  Windsurfing is excellent on the 
southeast side of the island at Sorobon Beach where the winds are 
constant.  Hotels in Bonaire are relatively small except for a few.  We 
stay at the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort and Casino.  This hotel usually 
offers a good discount and is one of the closest to the airport and shore 
dives.  The hotel has Peter Hughes diving with a good and safe staff.  
The casino is very small, but it gives you something else to do at night.  
Richards is a restaurant on the water within walking distance from the 
hotel to the south.  Richards is a must.  The only thing we found on the 
expensive side were restaurant prices.  In Bonaire, you get what you pay 
for in dining out so be prepared for higher prices.  Like all Caribbean 
Islands, watch your water intake.  Try to bring your own bottle when it 
comes to water.  Never eat raw or even smoked fish.  Last time in 
Bonaire we had some smoked marlin and were violently ill for 3 days 
(this was NOT at Richards).  If you stay at the Divi Flamingo, try to get 
a room that is on the water on the upper floor.  This hotel is actually on 
a coral reef with these rooms being over the water.  You can also just

Grand Cayman is located southwest of Cuba and is a British Colony.  
English is spoken everywhere and Americans are the most popular 
tourists.  It is only a one and a half hour flight from Miami or Tampa so 
weekends are the busiest times.  Grand Cayman has the clearest water 
we have seen anywhere.  7 mile beach is found on the west side of the 
island and is by far "the place to stay".  The water on the west side is 
generally calm while the east coast is rough.  Grand Cayman is widely 
known for its excellent scuba diving, but it is now diverse enough to 
offer other water and land interests to keep the non-diver busy.  To the 
north is a large turtle farm that is open to the public.  Thousands of 
turtles are farmed here to help replenish the wild population.  In 
Georgetown, mini-subs offer tourists a deep underwater view of why 
Cayman is a diver magnet.  Deep sea fishing is also available along with 
all the water sports you can think of.  Cayman has a long history back in 
the pirate days and has numerous sites of interest.  Keep an eye out for 
treasure, back in the 70's, a tourist was swimming off the shore at the 
Holiday Inn (near the Governors house) and saw a shiny object in the 
sand.  He dove down to find a large amount of sunken treasure in the 
millions.  Once you see how clear the water is, you will see how it could 
happen.  Diver-want-to-be's will love Cayman as well as snorkelers.  
You can actually take a resort course in the morning for a few hours and 
then dive just like the rest of the certified divers for the rest of your trip.  
The only difference is that when you dive, you and your group are 
accompanied by a dive master.  This deal is excellent and we 
recommend it to everyone.  It's like having a professional tour guide 
while you dive.  Look for coupon books on the island and at your hotel.  
Many of them have excellent dive discounts for resort dives.  Getting 
around in Cayman is easy.  The taxis are cheap and clean.  They do 
drive on the left side of the road like in England, so watch out for cars.  
In the 10 years that we have been going there, we have never rented a 
car or scooter.  We rate the local people at the top of the Caribbean 
friendly scale.  Unlike places like Jamaica or Mexico, no one is peddling 
trinkets or pestering you to buy something.  The economy is strong and 
it shows.  Grand Cayman ranks as one of the top offshore banking 
centers in the world, and the Cayman dollar known as "C.I." is stronger 
than the U.S. dollar in Cayman.  The U.S. dollar is accepted everywhere.  
Recommending restaurants in Cayman is difficult.  Every time we go 
there, they either changed ownership or just closed up.  A safe bet is the 
Lone Star Bar & Grill.  One of the most popular dive/snorkel trips is 
Stingray City.  You go to a shallow (12') spot to the northeast of the 
island where female southern stingrays gather to be fed.  One thing to be 
careful about are the numerous yellow tail snappers.  When you feed the 
stingrays, these aggressive fish dart in and bite at anything that looks 
like squid (your finger).  We suggest not actually feeding the stingrays 
but acting like you have food in your palm.  It works just as well.  Also 
be careful with the stingrays.  Although its rare, you can get accidentally 
hit by the tail barber which has the sting cells.  You can find it at the 
base of the tail and it points in the same direction as the tail.  Common 
advice for stingray stings is to immerse the stung area in hot water (not 
scalding) and go to the doctor.  Another popular dive is the wreck of the 
Ore Verde.  Its not just popular, it is also a great dive.  Any and every 
dive site in Cayman is good.  If you are prone to sea sickness (like me), 
keep in mind that even though it may be relatively smooth on shore, 
when you get out to the dive site, the rolling waves can be just big 
enough to get that side to side rolling action that gets you sick.  Best 
advice here is to try and stay away from the northwest dive sites near the 
north wall. The water is deeper there and the water more rolling.

St. Martin / St. Maarten is an island split in half by the French and 
Dutch in 1648.  Legend has it that a contest was held by the French and 
Dutch where one Frenchman walked one way and a Dutchman walked 
the other way around the island and where they met would dictate the 
boundaries.  To the north is the French side and to the South the Dutch.  
There is a big difference between the sides.  The French side is less 
developed commercially while the Dutch side looks more like an 
American tourist city.  The Dutch side is where the shopping is and the 
cruise ships dock.  It also boasts casinos.  The French side is more 
reserved and “island like”.  We preferred the French side and stayed at 
the Mount Vernon Hotel on Orient Beach.  Orient Beach is possibly the 
most beautiful beach in the world.  One thing to keep in mind about this 
beach is that it is clothing optional.  There is a nudist motel called Club 
Orient to the south on the beach at the opposite end  of the beach from 
Hotel Mount Vernon.  They are far away from each other, but you can 
get the occasional nude beach walker.  Needless to say, people watching 
takes on a whole new meaning here.  Orient beach is a popular beach 
and offers all kinds of water sports including bungy jumping from a 
parasail.  You tandem up on the parasail and then bungy down when 
you get high enough.  Windsurfing is very popular on this beach.  Orient 
beach has a constant wind/breeze which is great for keeping bugs away, 
but not so good on the newly styled hair doo.  Grand Case is a small city 
to the northwest that has numerous eating shacks on the water.  This is 
very casual dining with some places that grill your food (lobster, ribs) in 
front of you.  The ribs are the best we have ever had and very 
inexpensive.  There are also numerous French restaurants doting the 
country side that are world class.  We would recommend renting a car in 
St. Martin.  The roads are good and very easy to navigate.  Windsurfing 
is a huge sport on Orient Beach, but scuba diving is not so good.  There 
are some wrecks around the Dutch side, but visibility is not the best.  
Most divers make a day trip over to Saba where diving is great.  
Submarine excursions can be found at Simpson Bay to the south.  Keep 
in mind that most airlines arrive at the Dutch airport Juliana.  Keep 
away from the “cattle call” taxis leaving from the airport.  They will 
herd you on with a bunch of other people and you will have to drive 
around dropping people off at hotels that are in the opposite direction 
from yours.  We suggest renting a car.  Most major car rental companies 
can be found at the airport.
