Most travelers to Kenya will be on some kind of tour package that is considered a photo safari. We strongly recommend planning your safari with one of these tours. You can actually go to Nairobi and just pick-up a safari there, but we do not suggest doing this. We found a tour company called Ivory Safari Tours (877-SAFARI-8) out of Washington that offered a good airline employee discount land package. We went with a private tour package, just us in the van. This is more expensive but remember that you are going to be stuck with the people on your tour for 10 days and you run the risk of having nightmare co-tourists that may not even speak your language. If you have ever been on a cruise, you know how different people can be in constricted areas. Picture sitting next to those people everyday for long periods of time in a small van, and to think you flew 20 hours to deal with this. The private tour also lets you decide when and where you go to view the game. This becomes very important in the morning. Most game drives are dictated by your hotels/lodges dining times. On a private tour, you go when you want to. Here’s how our tour went. We left Nairobi early in the morning and went to Tsavo National Park. In Tsavo, we stayed at the Kilaguni Lodge for one night. The next morning we went to Amboseli National Park and stayed at the Amboseli Serena Lodge for 2 nights. We then left for Aberdare National Park and stayed at Treetops for one night. Then we went to Samburu National Park and stayed at Larsens Tented Camp for one night. We then went to Mount Kenya Safari Club for one night and then to Lake Naivash and stayed at the Lake Naivasha Hotel for one night. The next day we went to Masai Mara Game Reserve and stayed at the Mara Safari Tented Club for 2 nights. The next day we went back to Nairobi. Our favorite places were Larsens Tented Camp and Amboseli Serena Lodge, but every place we stayed was beyond incredible. If I had it to do over, I would skip Treetops and add a day to Larsens Tented Camp. Larsens has tents that should be considered 5 star tents. There are very few tents, so it’s not crowded and the service is excellent. Your dinner is cooked over a grill. The game around this area is great. Amboseli Serena Lodge in Amboseli National Park boasts the largest concentration of game anywhere. Your view of Mt. Kilamanjaro is incredible. Mount Kenya Safari Club is a beautiful lodge. This lodge is the epitome of decadence and even has a fire place in your room that the staff starts for you while you are at dinner. When you’re there, check out the pool table. It has a lot of history to it and it is huge. When you go to the Mara Safari Tented Club, your driver gets a break. The club has its own drivers and land rovers that you view the game in , complete with cold drinks. While at the Mara Safari Tented Club, keep in mind that the Masai Mara is the Kenya name for the Serengeti. We wanted to actually go into the Serengeti, so we had our driver (not the clubs driver), take us one day. He hired a guard to come with us, and we went. We figured why come all this way and not actually go into the Serengeti. The guard was for two reasons, poachers and if the van broke down. There is a problem with poachers on the Tanzanian border. They come from Tanzania for elephant tusks and leopards. The penalty for poaching is execution, so if you come across one, they will do anything to keep you from radioing in their position. When we were at Amboseli, a tourist van had come across some poachers on the road. The van driver stopped and started backing up. The poacher shot at the van trying to hit the radio but the bullet went through the front of the van, the dashboard, the front seat and hit a tourist in the knee. The only thing worse than poaching in Kenya is hurting a tourist. I’m not trying to scare you, just make you aware that poaching is a problem around the border. Another interesting thing to do is visit a Masai village. Have your driver set up a visit to a Masai village. This usually means paying off the village chief. Keep in mind that in order to become a Masai chief, you must first kill a lion by yourself using only a spear or knife. Do not eat or drink anything at these villages. Which brings me to medical issues. Make sure you have all the required and recommended shots before you go, and we suggest the flying doctor insurance. Save some room for souvenirs. Everything in Kenya is inexpensive. We found that the best deals are from villagers coming up to your van with items for sale. At times this can be scary and aggressive, but we had fun with it. Watch your stuff when you do this including earrings and necklaces. Make sure your driver takes you to the equator city to see a demonstration on water and how the equator effects its rotation. There is so much more to tell you, but the most important thing is that this by far was the best, most exciting, most relaxing and most unforgettable travel vacation we have ever had. Houston, Chicago, New York or 213-545-7504 Airlines: Northwest, Air China, Canadian Air, British Airways, Quantas, United As one of the last communist countries, China offers the traveler a look at a society that is largely controlled by fear. We went to China having one thing in mind, to see the WALL. We really had no idea what other reason there would be to go to China. Boy were we wrong. China was nothing like what we expected. I expected wall to wall people being that Chinas population is over 1 billion. In Beijing, there are a lot of people, but just ten minutes out of town you find the most beautiful green mountains and rolling hills that are not populated. If you think Yosemite is pretty, you have to see China. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza (48 Wangfujing Dajie) in downtown Beijing. This hotel is beautiful. We highly recommend it. It is a 5 star hotel that is central to all the sites. We also recommend using taxis, they are inexpensive and driving seems like it would be a nightmare. Shopping in Beijing and the rest of China is excellent. You can find your best buys at the wall, but you must haggle. We found the best tactic was to give them your price minus 20% and when they say “too low” then say O.K. thank you and start walking away. They will yell (this will soon be familiar to you) “hello, hello, hello.” There are government owned “Friendship Stores” that are everywhere, but the prices here are high. We decided to promote capitalism and shopped at the small stores and vendors, they always had better prices. Silk alley is by the U.S. Embassy, so we suggest checking in at the Embassy when you get there and then walking about a block over to silk alley. This is where you find the Polo knock-offs. Try everything on before you buy it. The sizing is strange. It’s not just small or large, it’s O.K. in the body but short in the sleeves or vice versa. Warning, do not buy software here. We were approached by people selling pirated CD’s and software. This is illegal. We booked a van and an English speaking driver to take us to the wall (we set this up at the hotel at the bell desk). There are two places at the wall we recommend you see. Badaling is about 50 miles northwest of Beijing and Mutianyu is about the same distance to the north of Beijing. Badaling is touristy and is by far the most popular place to see and walk on the wall. You take a cable car up to the wall where you can walk as far as you want. Great souvenirs here. Mutianyu is less touristy and the wall is in a more natural state of repair or lack of. There were also a lot less people here and, from the parking lot, you just walk right up onto the wall instead of having to ride a cable car like at Badaling. We suggest going to both places. Another warning, do not buy old coins from vendors. The Chinese are excellent forgers. We purchased some coins at Mutianyu and found them to be very good fakes when we got home. One thing you must do in Beijing is have Peking Duck. The Holiday Inn actually had the best Peking Duck even compared to the number one rated duck restaurant. Other must sees are the Summer Palace, Lama Temple (Yonghe Gong), and Ming Tombs. Plan to spend a day each at the Imperial Palace, the Summer Palace and the Ming Tombs. You can do the Lama Temple and Tian’anmen Square in about half a day each. We did not like the Beijing Zoo. We found the conditions for the animals to be so bad that we left feeling sorry that we helped perpetuate its existence by paying the admission fee. If you think human rights in China are bad, you wont believe the animal rights. A side excursion to Xi’an may be something you want to do. Xi’an is where they found over 7,000 life size terra-cotta soldiers and horses buried in a hidden tomb in 1974. We booked our trip at the hotel for around $200 each on Air China. The flight was about 2 hours and the drive about an hour. We flew out in the morning and came back that same night and we had plenty of time to see the terra-cotta army. If you plan on going to the Summer Palace, you may want to price out some prices on freshwater pearls in the U.S. before your trip. We purchased some excellent quality freshwater pearls at the Summer Palace for about half the price you would pay in the U.S. Don’t forget to haggle. Make sure to have lunch at the restaurant where George Bush ate while there. Ask anyone for directions to where President Bush ate lunch and they’ll tell you where. The food was great. If jade is up your alley, China is the place for you. Jade is everywhere. Again, the best prices are in the small shops. Tea is also inexpensive and the quality is unmatched. We found the best prices on tea at the government tea store (not the Friendship Store). Keep in mind that very few people speak English, so be prepared to do a lot of pointing. By the way, there is a Dunkin Donuts about 3 blocks from the Holiday Inn. CHINA HOTELS BEIJING -Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza - 385 rooms . Located in the heart of downtown.
